Last night—despite Texas being the only state to still be actively considering anti-transgender legislation—state legislators introduced yet another bill that targets transgender people.

In response, NCTE Executive Director Mara Keisling said:

This new bill is bad for Texas’ economy, but what’s really important is that it’s bad for Texans. The bill sponsors’ motivations are transparent. Businesses and athletic associations responded to the clearly anti-transgender SB 6 by threatening to pull their money out of Texas, so lawmakers wrote a new bill that tries to repackage SB 6 in a way that might mollify major economic players. But it’s just another extremist, ideologically driven gambit. Like its predecessor, HB 2899 is still meant to directly target the over 125,000 transgender people who live in Texas. We’ve seen what’s happening in North Carolina, and it must not happen again anywhere else. Legislation like this must be stopped.
