Just as he promised, President Trump has nominated an extreme judge hostile to fundamental freedoms. Often called a carbon-copy of the late Justice Antonin Scalia, Judge Neil Gorsuch has a record of supporting the use of religion to trample the rights of others, and deep hostility to laws protecting workers, consumers, and civil rights.
The Supreme Court will soon be called upon to rule on unconstitutional actions by President Trump, as well as whether to set limits on voter suppression and whether to recognize the basic dignity and humanity of transgender people. The American people must be assured that any new justice will protect their cherished rights and freedoms and act as a check on President Trump. Gorsuch’s record shows that he does not meet that test, and NCTE calls on Senators to reject his confirmation.
