NCTE Executive Director Mara Keisling participated in the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus’s bipartisan Transgender Equality Task Force's event today, welcoming Rep. Joseph Kennedy III as its new chair. Of the task force, she said:

We thank Rep. Kennedy for his leadership as we forge ahead to protect and preserve the rights and protections for trans people, for which we've fought for decades. Facing an antagonistic administration in the White House, which has already seen fit to target the equality of trans students, we’re thankful for the Caucus’ support and that the T in LGBT isn’t silent.

The challenges we face are many, as the deaths of seven trans women of color in 2017 indicate. But we must remain steadfast in our commitment to persist and resist until all recognize that trans rights are civil rights are human rights, and that anything less than equality is unacceptable.
