Today, President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders attacking refugees, border communities, and any city that acts to protect vulnerable immigrants. The orders direct the building of a costly and potentially deadly border wall, and direct devastating financial retaliation against dozens of cities that protect vulnerable immigrants.

“President Trump’s assault on human rights and human decency has arrived with these bigoted orders that should disturb every American,” said NCTE Executive Director Mara Keisling. “We have learned as a country that walls and discrimination don’t work, and they are not who we are. We stand for liberty, freedom of religion, and welcoming those seeking refuge. Make no mistake, these acts of pointless cruelty will cost lives. Today’s action shows that President Trump will follow through on his threats to persecute those seen as different, even the most helpless families.”

NCTE calls on Congress to immediately pass legislation to protect refugees fleeing war and other deadly threats.
