Nominee call trans children part of “Satan’s plan”

Washington, DC—The National Center for Transgender Equality calls on the Trump-Pence Administration to withdraw its nomination of anti-LGBTQ extremist Jeff Mateer for a lifetime federal judgeship. In a 2015 speech titled “The Church and Homosexuality,” Mateer disparaged a transgender student, saying that the existence of transgender children, “just really shows you how Satan's plan is working and the destruction that's going on.”

Mateer also supports subjecting LGBTQ children and youth to the dangerous quack practice of so-called “conversion therapy,” rejected by mainstream medical and pediatric groups.

NCTE Executive Director Mara Keisling offers the following statement:

“How dare he? How dare anyone talk about children this way? This nomination is another slap in the face to hundreds of thousands of families across the country and their children who are transgender. How can they explain to their children that a public official, let alone a judge, speaks about them this way? This nominee simply cannot be confirmed.”
