Washington, DC—One year ago, the worst mass shooting in American history occurred at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub, claiming the lives of 49 people and wounding 58 others. Even now, its effects continue to reverberate within the LGBTQ community and beyond. Marking the occasion, NCTE Executive Director Mara Keisling offers the following statement:
“The National Center for Transgender Equality stands united in grief with the LGBTQ community as we remember and mourn 49 lives taken one year ago, today, at Orlando's Pulse nightclub. We recognize that the overwhelming number of victims at Pulse were from the Latinx LGBTQ community of Orlando, and each one had hopes and dreams senselessly stolen by gun violence. The tragedy of June 12th, 2016 underscores the importance of our work to end violence and discrimination against transgender people.”
