Washington, DC—Today, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights issued a statement criticizing the President for his July 26 tweet announcing that transgender people would apparently not be permitted to serve in the military, and calling on the Trump/Pence administration to reverse this dangerous and un-American course. National Center for Transgender Equality Executive Director Mara Keisling issued the following statement:

“We once again thank the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights for continuing to stand for civil rights and against the wrong-headed, dangerous, and absurd policies of the Trump/Pence administration. Not only would this policy be bad for military readiness, bad for 15,000 current service members and bad for current and incoming students at our military academies, but it is terrible for civil rights.

It is important for trans people, including our service members, to know that, even when we are attacked by the highest levels of this Administration for being ourselves or just doing our jobs, more and more good people have our backs.”
