The National Center for Transgender Equality opposes the nomination of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education because of her career of undermining public education and her long association with anti-LGBT hate groups.
The Michigan billionaire has been a leading proponent of school voucher policies that undermine public education and leave low-income students behind. The policies DeVos has devoted her career to also funnel taxpayer funds to religious schools that can be hostile environments for young people who are different.
DeVos and her family’s foundations also have a long and troubling history of supporting anti-LGBT hate groups that spread myths and lies about transgender people, and funding conferences promoting the harmful quack science of “conversion therapy,” or trying to change a person’s gender identity or sexual orientation.
NCTE urges President-elect Trump to withdraw DeVos's nomination, and if he does not, urges the Senate to reject it.
