The Oxford, AL City Council has voted 3-2 to recall an anti-transgender city ordinance that could have put transgender people in jail for up to six months if they were caught using a bathroom that didn’t match the sex on their birth certificate.

NCTE Executive Director Mara Keisling said from the Oxford City Hall:

The excitement here in Oxford is palpable. Together with fellow advocates, it was amazing to be at the Oxford City Council as the council members voted to overturn their harmful and illegal ordinance. Anti-equality groups have been putting pressure on city councils all around the country to criminalize transgender people based on myths and misguided prejudice. Taking part in this major victory in Oxford fills me with hope that we can win in other cities and towns considering ordinances like this one, using facts to persuade them to follow Oxford’s lead.
