Washington, DC – Shortly before a planned vote, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan pulled their Affordable Care Act replacement bill, dealing a defeat to GOP repeal efforts. National Center for Transgender Equality Executive Director Mara Keisling offers the following statement:

“We are relieved that this dangerous effort to roll back health care for millions of Americans has failed. This bill would have been disastrous for everyone, but especially harmful to transgender Americans and their families who already face serious barriers to health care. We hope Congress will recognize this effort as ill-conceived and stop trying to take Americans' health care away.

At the same time, we will remain vigilant against any attempts to roll back the hard fought advances in health care for transgender people. Just this week, President Trump placed anti-LGBT extremist Roger Severino in charge of the Department of Health and Human Services civil rights office. We have worked too hard for too long to help transgender people get the health care they need--we will resist going backward at every turn.”
