NCTE and OSHA Alliance

About the NCTE and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Alliance

OSHA and the NCTE formed an Alliance to provide employers, transgender workers, and community groups with information, guidance, and access to OSHA resources that will help protect the health and safety of workers, particularly by: (1) helping to ensure adequate access to workplace restrooms, and (2) understanding the rights of workers and the responsibilities of employers under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act).

The goals of the Alliance include:

  • Reviewing, promoting, and disseminating OSHA's bulletin of best practices for workplace restroom access;
  • Developing and disseminating other materials on OSHA initiatives, workers' rights, and occupational safety and health to employers, workers, and transgender community members; and
  • Educating employers about these issues through employer and LGBT community groups, conferences, and events.

“When a transgender worker is prevented from using the same restrooms as everyone else, it is not only humiliating—it threatens their physical health. Federal law requires all workers to have reasonable access to restrooms, and also prohibits discrimination against transgender people. This is a classic example of a workplace hazard that is potentially dangerous but easy to prevent. We look forward to collaborating with OSHA to educate workers and employers alike."
