On May 18, the National Center for Transgender Equality is celebrating 13 years of saving lives through policy change at our anniversary event, Transvisibility: The T’s Not Silent, in Washington, DC.

As transgender issues and people are seen from West Coast to East, from Hollywood to the White House, transgender visibility is at its peak. This year, NCTE celebrates some of the advocates and allies who have worked tirelessly to make transgender issues so visible.

The Andy Cray Transgender Health Advocacy Honor is awarded to people who have improved the lives of transgender people by increasing access to health care. It is named after the late Andrew Cray, who spent his too-short professional life devoted to getting federal and state governments to require that transition-related care be covered by private and public health insurance, such as Medicare and Medicaid.

This year, NCTE is honoring Arianna Lint, a transgender advocate who lives in Florida but whose impact is national. While she works for the Florida Department of Health by day, she devotes much of her time and attention to her national work through the TransLatina Coalition Executive Board.

Starting in 2006, for several years Lint did exceptional work in the Florida Department of Health and raised much-needed awareness around the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the transgender community, serving on the front lines to ensure that HIV-positive transgender people receive mentoring and pre- and post-treatment counseling. She used this and other platforms to mobilize transgender people and those affected by HIV/AIDS through various community-based mechanisms such as CHEERS for Peers, the AIDS Drug Assistance Program, and Work Group for Transgender People.

Lint also serves on the Executive Board of the TransLatina Coalition, where she advocates on behalf of transLatinas throughout Florida and nationally supporting access to healthcare, obtaining accurate identity documents, and addressing discrimination. For example, Lint is working in partnership with NCTE to create comprehensive guides in English and Spanish to help transgender Floridians navigate the name and gender change process. Lint is admired within the transgender movement for her resilience in advocating for immigration reform and ensuring the civil liberties of all. Her grassroots work addresses intersections in HIV/AIDS awareness, transgender rights, and immigration reform. Lint’s advocacy gives a voice to those who are often not represented, making her a crucial advocate in our movement.

With a resume of trailblazing advocacy, we thank Arianna Lint for all she has done for the community and wish her success as she continues to advance the health and equality of transgender Latin@ people in Florida and throughout the U.S.
