As Pride Month came to a close and in the shadow of the Orlando tragedy, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), part of the U.S. Department of Justice, released a report about LGBTQ youth within the juvenile justice system.
DOJ: Baltimore PD Abused African-Americans, Trans Women, Sex Workers
In a scathing report released today, the U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) found that the Baltimore Police Department has routinely violated civil rights in numerous ways. Among many problems cited in the 163-page report, the DOJ found that Baltimore police regularly targeted Black residents for stops and searches, used excessive force, ignored or demeaned sexual assault victims, harassed transgender women, and tolerated sexual abuse by officers, especially of sex workers.
Pennsylvania Updates Birth Certificate Gender Change Policy
Great news for transgender people born in Pennsylvania: Pennsylvania just became the 12th state in the U.S. to modernize their birth certificate policy! Under Pennsylvania’s new policy, individuals no longer need to provide proof of surgery to update the gender marker on their birth certificate. That removes a significant hurdle for many transgender people.
