Help Protect Transgender People from Discrimination in Healthcare

Image

A few weeks ago, we shared a huge victory with you: a groundbreaking proposed rule that would make it illegal for health providers and most insurance plans to discriminate against transgender people. And the government agency that issued the rule said that they listened to more than 200 trans people who shared their stories of discrimination. We did that together. And now we need to do it again.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is in charge of enforcing the Affordable Care Act, often called Obamacare. HHS released a proposed rule that—if adopted—would prohibit most insurance plans, including Medicaid, from denying coverage for transition-related care. It would also require health providers to treat people according to their gender identity.

We need your help to make this rule becomes a final reality. HHS is still deciding whether to adopt the proposed rule, and it wants to hear from the public to help it decide. So we have this final chance to send HHS a clear message: healthcare discrimination against transgender people should never be allowed. If enough of us speak up together, we can convince HHS to make these new protections permanent and make sure that most insurance companies will not be able to deny access to transition-related care. But we only have until November 9 to make our voices heard.

Send your comments and healthcare stories to HHS by clicking here.

Take a look at our Frequently Asked Questions to find out more about the proposed rule. You can read the full proposed rule here.

Don't miss this chance to stand with trans people and tell HHS that trans people can’t wait any longer to access this vital care.
