Happy Mother's Day from NCTE
Happy Mother's Day from NCTE! Today we bring you a post from Sherry, the mother of a trans teen in Alabama.

The day my child was born, so was I, a newborn mother. Together we looked at the world in a way that was new to us... through an infant's eyes and through those of a first-time mom.

As we've grown together, we've learned together. There hasn't been one day in the past 17 1/2 years that I haven't counted my blessings... but one day in particular stands out in memory as one of my proudest mother moments.

My child sat me down, and explained to me that he was male - but I had given birth to a female. My son was telling me that he was transgender. My honest first response was absolute acceptance. When I first learned we were expecting a baby, gender did not matter. I hoped for a healthy, happy child. That is exactly what I have. But then, I realized I have so much more! My brave son trusted me with his truth. He trusted his mother's love to accept him unconditionally. What an honor! I knew my son could come to me with anything.

On Mother's Day I reflect upon the unique opportunity we have been given - to transition together, to learn together, and to view this world in a new way once again. How lucky can one mom be?

Sherry is a mother in Alabama. She met NCTE's Executive Director Mara Keisling at the City Hall in Oxford, Alabama last week as they both pushed the City Council to repeal the city's horrible anti-transgender bathroom ordinance. Fortunately, the push for repeal was successful and the ordinance was voted down that day.
