Equal Justice Works Fellowship

The National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) is a social justice advocacy organization devoted to ending discrimination and violence against transgender people through education, advocacy and collaboration on national issues of importance. NCTE is seeking to host law students or recent graduates for Equal Justice Works Fellowships beginning in September 2018. We will work with qualified individuals to create an EJW Fellowship application focused on expanding access to legal services for transgender communities or other project proposals 

  • Familiarity with transgender community: Strong understanding of the issues and needs facing transgender people in the United States. 

  • Commitment to social justice: Familiarity with systems of inter-connected oppressions and issues such as poverty, racism, policing, criminal justice, and immigration. 

  • Project leadership: Experience in planning, leading, and managing projects, involving multiple people in various roles. 

  • Creativity and Innovation: Ability to see opportunities and develop new approaches for organizing. 

  • Self-direction: Ability to take initiative and be self-sufficient in a small organization environment. 

  • Communications: Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with others who may work differently. 

  • Prioritization: Ability to independently set and meet goals, prioritize, plan, manage, and complete work on deadline. 

  • Time management: Excellent organizational and time-management skills, detail-oriented, including ability to manage multiple tasks independently. 

Proposed Project: Ensuring Access to Name and Gender Change Resources 

  • Court AdvocacyWork with state and local courts to develop standardized procedures and forms to obtain court orders for gender changedevelop state by state instructions for individuals to access to court orders for gender change for NCTE’s ID Document Center. 

  • Legal ResourcesIdentify legal resources and guides needed, particularly in the area of ID updates, to assist transgender individuals and organizations across the countrypartner with pro bono law firms to manage creation of those guides and see the projects through completion; manage and update the ID Document Center to provide accurate legal information for people in each state. 

  • Support Trans Legal Services Providers: Manage and expand NCTE’s Trans Legal Services Network, including planning and leading conference calls and in-person meetings on various topics. 

  • Community engagement:Create blog posts, webinars, and other informational events to provide legal information and resources for trans communities and advocates across the country. Connect network members and individuals to facilitate legal support. 

  • Technical assistance:  Field individual and organization questions and provide appropriate resources and referrals in the areas of ID documents, healthcare, schools, and various other legal inquiries.
