Stop Sexual Abuse of LGBT Immigration Detainees

The deadline to submit your letter to Secretary Napolitano has passed. Thank you to the over 800 people who took a stand against sexual abuse in immigration detention. Learn more about the forthcoming regulations here.

You can help protect the more than 500,000 people in immigration detention from sexual abuse right now. Of these, many are LGBT people and people with intersex conditions who are at heightened risk of sexual abuse.

Secretary Napolitano is on the verge of issuing standards to address this problem; however, the standards she plans to issue are not strong enough. In their current form, they allow some facilities to delay adopting these protections indefinitely and they do not require training all facility staff on critical topics such as working with LGBTI people. Other standards, such as those for housing and searches of transgender people and those with intersex conditions, also need to be strengthened.
